about

"My inspiration for Waiting is the hypnotic music from Mali and the African style guitar playing of Davey Graham. The blues inspires all my song writing but in this particular case the simplicity of it embellished by David Baron’s beautiful analogue instruments and tabla drums enable the song to build and build without changing its course.I had recently seen the footage of Monterey Pop Festival held in June 1967 which my boss attended and wrote about for the London Evening Standard. It was one of the very first pop music festivals and laid the ground for others such as Woodstock a couple of years later. One of the most striking and unusual performances was that of Ravi Shankar because nobody had heard his music before. In the audience you can see Jimmy Hendrix being transfixed by the hypnotic nature of his sitar playing and the incredible drumming of Alla Rakha. Everybody is mesmerised in the film. This was a huge musical inspiration for me behind Waiting.Lyrically it was written at the end of a six year love affair: The door of which was finally shut and the call never came."Lettie
